Patterns and textures are very similar subjects in the photography approach and much of the skill is in seeing the texture and then making the most of it. Lighting plays a big part in texture shots as low side lighting will make the subject look more three-dimensional, simply because it lifts the texture by creating shadows. Avoid shooting in harsh light though or the shadows will be so strong they could compete for attention. Good subjects for textures include:
- Tree bark
- Close ups of skin
- Flacking paint
- Rust
- Rocky outcrops
- Sand grains
